Companies using Small Business Server (SBS) 2003 will often have had their IT system set up by an external consultant. It is hugely important to make sure that a proper Small Business Server backup strategy has been set up and that it is being properly checked and maintained.

SBS 2003 Backup

Small Business Server 2003 comes complete with SBS Backup, a server utility that uses NT Backup to backup essential server data to backup tape or external hard drive. This provides a basic level of backup to the SBS system that may or may not be sufficient, depending on the individual requirements of the company.

If Small Business Server Backup has been set up only on a basic level, it may be that a nightly backup is running to a single external hard disk drive. This is not sufficient. In the event of a break-in the thief could steal the server AND the backup device, or the backup could burn in a fire along with the main copy of the data.
